Our History
Keep Alachua County Beautiful is a local organization that strives to improve the surrounding communities in Alachua County.
It is associated with its parent organization Keep America Beautiful (KAB), “The Nation’s Largest Community Network” organization. KAB was founded in 1953 in New York City by a group of community leaders who wanted to bring the public and private sectors together to develop and promote a national cleanliness ethic. After Keep America Beautiful was established, a series of public service advertising campaigns was launched. The advertising campaign lasted 20 years, reaching tens of millions of Americans. This national exposure boomed the development of the organization and became a national leader for community improvement and educational network.
A national non-profit organization, KAB now has a network of more than 540 local, national and international programs to educate citizens about how they can improve the environments they live in through recycling, litter control and waste management. These programs are carried out through affiliate organizations involving more than 565 town, city, and counties and 22 statewide programs. Overall, Keep America Beautiful and its affiliates improve the environments in more than 15,000 communities.
